The Perelman School of Medicine's IMPaCT curriculum (Integrating Medicine | Patient Care | Transitions) offers a wealth of opportunities for students to customize their medical education, pursue unique professional experiences, and earn additional designations, certificates, or degrees. Notable progress has been made in recent years regarding brain-computer interfaces (BCI)—technology that provides a direct communication link between the brain and an external device, primarily by recording electrical activity generated by neurons. Typically, these medical devices are surgically implanted deep within or onto the surface of the brain. From monitoring epilepsy to developing therapies for traumatic brain injury, applications for this growing field are tremendous. In 2021, marking a significant step forward in neuro-technology, BCI device companies received approval from the FDA to conduct human clinical studies. Join Frances E. Jensen, MD, FACP, FANA, FAAN, FAES and a panel of esteemed Penn Medicine faculty in discussing the frontier of innovative neuro-devices and the future of this groundbreaking technology.
